Lungs

Description
The lungs are a sacred and essential organ of life. They are the wings of the heart, and the oceans of our bodies, inhaling and exhaling in the rhythm of life.

Approach
Sitting
In sitting meditation, gently bring your felt-sense to your lungs. Like shining a flashlight, focus the light of attention slowly and patiently on the passage, starting at the nose, mouth, throat, trachea, and down into the two main bronchi, spreading awareness into right and left lung as you reach the bronchioles and alveoli (the millions of tiny thin-walled air sacs inside). Then bring your felt-sense to the connective tissue surrounding the lungs.

To feel is to know. Without using thought, use your eyes and felt-sense awareness to look within. Hold awareness for several seconds to minutes and breathe as you open to the emotion and impressions that are being held there.

Be present, compassionate and nonjudgmental, no matter what arises.

Shaking
In standing meditation, inhale and come up onto your toes. Exhale, come down onto your feet, and begin shaking your whole body (it is recommended for women to wear a sports bra).

Relax any tension, shaking gently and non-violently. Close the eyes to feel more, if balance can be maintained. Again, bring your awareness to your lungs, and shake them lovingly away from the surrounding fascia and connective tissue, so that they are free and unbound. Lungs can be sticky so shake them away from the back, the sides and the front of the upper thoracic rib cage. Shake out grief, shame, regret. Shake out the past impressions your lungs have been holding for you, in order for you to keep going. Become aware, releasing their burdens. If it's available to you, shake out any areas where there is tension through the passage. Shake out the nose, mouth, throat, trachea, the two main bronchi, and spread awareness into right and left lung. Shake out the bronchioles until you reach the alveoli. Shake for several minutes, letting your lungs express.

After many minutes of observation and processing, shake in tenderness. Shake in love, acceptance, and light.

When you are ready to complete the process, come to a stop. Stand and feel your connection to greater life.
